Groovin’Magic Album Launch Show

Sunday 29th August 2021 8pm

The Brewery Yard Club

Landgate, Rye, East Sussex TN31 7LH

‘The Drawtones’ return to Rye with not only a feast of iconic jazz and blues, soul and funk grooves, but also with legendary guitarist, Jim Mullen, who guests on their new album ‘Groovin’ Magic’, being launched live tonight!

You may know Jim from Claire Martin’s award-winning album ‘Bumpin’ – a tribute to Wes Montgomery; from ‘Average White Band’; from ‘Morrissey-Mullen’, or simply as “One of the world’s finest jazz musicians” (Martin Taylor MBE).

Emulating the great Hammond organ combos with material from such artists as Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff, George Benson, Booker-T, Junior Walker, Grover Washington, The Crusaders, George Duke, Steely Dan, Ronnie Scott's Club favourites, ‘The Drawtones’, claim ownership by way of their masterful musicianship and proven jazz pedigree.

Julian Nicholas has a distinguished playing career with luminaries such as Jimmy Witherspoon, Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Carleen Anderson and ‘Loose Tubes’, and has supported Nina Simone twice! “His beautiful and creative playing makes Julian one of my favourite saxophonists” - Bobby Wellins.

Rod Pooley has steered the ship from behind the multi-textured Hammond organ on voyages with Jools Holland Band’s Derek Nash, and Martin Shaw, who says “awesome songs and infectious grooves”, and Dennis Rollins, who says “...always groovin’ hard!” of Rod and the band.

The awesome talents of Jess Dann on drums and Dan Dotor on bass complete a top-draw line-up!

The Drawtones “Groovin’ Magic” CD Album

Hammond Jazz and Funk Groove Band

The magic ingredient on iconic sounds from the 50s right up to current star Cory Henry of Snarky Puppy, the Hammond groove cuts like a canyon through Soul, Jazz and Funk in the work of genre-defining artists such as Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff, George Benson, Booker-T, Junior Walker, Grover Washington, The Crusaders, George Duke, Steely Dan and many more….

Rod Pooley’s ‘The Drawtones: Hammond Groove’ creatively explores this lineage without being a mere carbon copy. All of them artists in their own right, the members of the outfit bring their own energy, fun and funk to the table! Alongside organ maestro Rod, the frontliner Julian Nicholas’s reputation precedes him as a saxophone colossus, and Andy Williams was resident guitarist at the original Pizza Express Dean Street jazz club for many years. The immensely talented Jessica Dann and Daniel Dotor stoke the boiler on drums and bass respectively.
